PRESS RELEASE

Edgmont Country Club completes extensive upgrades & renovation to golf course.

Edgemont, PA, - Edgmont County Club, founded in 1963, recently completed an extensive renovation project at a total cost of over $1 million.

The project included: installation of a state of the art irrigation system, GPS mapping of irrigation system and all course and property features, replacement of the cart paths, rebuilding of the sand traps and lengthening or modifying several holes.

The new irrigation system expands the coverage area by about 30% compared to the previous system and is very efficient.  Glen Thomas, Edgmont’s Superintendent of 20 years, said, “The new system has allowed me to water more of the course with less labor while using less water. I have seen a big improvement in our fairways and greens in a very short time and I directly attribute it the new irrigation system.”

One hundred percent of the cart paths were also replaced and some were rerouted. All paths were widened to 8 feet. The tee boxes on the 16th and 17th holes were greatly expanded which resulted in lengthening the two holes by over 100 yards in total from the back tees. A strategically placed fairway bunker was added to the 11th hole. Over 3000 feet of drain lines were added and the sand replaced in all of the course’s 45 sand traps.  In several areas of the course the drainage system was also renovated.

Thomas said about the renovation “We got a little lucky while we were installing the irrigation system and  we were able to implement a few other projects that I had wanted to do for some time. We got quite a  bit more done than we originally set out to do with minimal damage to the golf course.” Photos showing the progress of the renovation can be found on the club’s website at http://www.edgmont.com/statusreport.htm.

Ed Dougherty (Edgmont’s member of the PGA Champions Tour, has been using Edgmont as his home course since 1969)  said “The greens and fairways are the best I have ever seen them and the changes to the 11th  make it a great golf hole. I also think the lengthening of 16 & 17 were great ideas.”

Tom Coyne, contributor to Golf Magazine and an author of two books on golf, The Gentlemen’s Game & the recently published Paper Tiger said "The new Edgmont is a joy to play -- new, bold tee boxes tees; tighter fairways; quicker greens -- and an ideal new cart routing that makes the course easier to navigate and the golf holes nicer to look at.  The most significant changes, however, are imperceptible to the eye -- the extensive work done underground, in the new drainage and irrigation systems -- but you are well aware of them by the end of the round, after a day of one enjoyable golf shot after another."

Edgmont Country Club has always been very active in using golf to help charities. In 1967 Bob Hope visited Edgmont to participate in a benefit Hope for the Blind Golfers Association. The Club is currently working on plans to mark the 40th anniversary of this event in October 2007. The Club is also preparing for the 29th annual Edgmont Classic Golf Tournament which this year is being held on September 9th  2006. This is a better ball of partners competitive 18 hole tournament. Proceeds from the event will benefit local chapters of the Special Olympics. Edgmont, for many years, has made the course available to Special Olympians for practice and training and is now working to raise money for this cause.   For more information visit www.edgmont.com/classic/
