Over the years there have been many questions and a great deal of
speculation as to why the name of the club is spelled without the
middle
"e". Some have said it was to save time, ink, and money.
Others have said because the first sign arrived spelled that way.
The purpose of this article is to set straight the story of the spelling
the Club's name.
The Township, which was incorporated in 1687, references
in its history early documents spelling it "Edgemond", "Edgmond", "Edgemont"
or "Edgmont", with the Township officially settling on "Edgmont" in
the nineteenth century.
Like many of the famous golf courses around the
world the course was named after the local area "Edgmont",
without the middle "e".
The United States Postal Service established a post office in the
township in 1823 but the U.S. Geological Survey decided in 1891
that the federal government would spell it "Edgemont" with
the middle "e" even though the township spelled it without
the middle "e".
In addition to Pennsylvania there is an "Edgemont"
in each of the following states:
Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, (Washington, County), Maryland,
(Frederick, County), Maryland, New, Hampshire, North, Carolina,
Ohio, South, Dakota, (Cocke, County),
Tennessee, (Sullivan, County), Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington,
(Cabell, County), West, Virginia, (Marion, County), West, Virginia
There are three areas knows as "Edgemont",
PA (Dauphin County, Northampton County and Delaware County).
There is no "Edgmont" anywhere else
in the country. Maybe the U.S. Geological Survey was looking for consistency.
This makes the Club's postal address have the two different spellings:
Edgmont Country Club
5180 West Chester Pike
PO Box 207
Edgemont, PA 19028
Just to add to the name confusion - since most of the on line mapping
services and GPS databases are based on postal delivery routes,
and not physical addresses, to find the club on an online map or
GPS units the address is:
Edgmont Country Club
5180 West Chester Pike
Newtown Square, PA 19073
The
Club is not the only one who has issues with to "e" or not to "e"
